Pool Fencing
Code-compliant safety fencing that protects your family while enhancing your pool area.

Pool Safety Starts With Proper Fencing
A pool is one of the best features a home can have, especially in California. But it also comes with serious safety responsibilities. Pool fencing isn't just a good idea. It's required by law in California, and for very good reasons. Drowning remains a leading cause of accidental death for young children, and most of these tragedies happen in backyard pools.
The right pool fence creates a secure barrier that prevents unsupervised access to your pool. It gives you peace of mind knowing your children, grandchildren, and visiting kids stay safe. It also protects neighborhood children who might wander into your yard, and it can reduce your homeowner's insurance premiums. Beyond safety, a well-designed pool fence enhances your outdoor living space and adds value to your property.
We've installed hundreds of pool fences throughout Santa Cruz since 2024. We know California's pool safety codes inside and out, and we make sure every installation meets or exceeds all requirements. More importantly, we help you choose a fence that keeps your family safe while looking great with your pool and landscape.
California Pool Fence Code Requirements
California has specific laws about pool fencing. Here's what you need to know:
- •Minimum height: Pool fences must be at least 5 feet tall measured from the ground. Most homeowners choose 5 or 6-foot heights.
- •Spacing requirements: Gaps between pickets or mesh openings cannot exceed 4 inches. This prevents small children from squeezing through.
- •No footholds: Horizontal rails or decorative elements that children could use to climb must be on the pool side of the fence, not the yard side.
- •Self-closing gates: All gates must close automatically and latch securely without any action from the user.
- •Self-latching mechanisms: Latches must be placed at least 54 inches above the ground and be designed so children cannot easily open them.
These requirements exist to prevent tragedy. We take them seriously and ensure every pool fence we install fully complies. When inspectors come to check your fence, it will pass without issues.
Pool Fence Material Options
Several materials work well for pool fencing, each with different looks and benefits:
Aluminum Fencing
This is our most popular pool fence option. Aluminum fencing looks elegant, never rusts, and requires almost no maintenance. It's see-through, which means you can supervise swimmers from anywhere in the yard. It comes in black, bronze, or white to match your pool deck and outdoor furniture.
Vinyl Fencing
Vinyl offers more privacy if you want to block views from neighbors. It's extremely durable in pool environments where chlorine and water splash can damage other materials. Vinyl won't rot, rust, or corrode, and it cleans easily with a hose.
Chain-Link with Mesh
For budget-conscious homeowners, chain-link fencing meets all safety codes at the lowest cost. Black vinyl-coated chain-link looks much better than standard galvanized and blends well with pool areas. You can add privacy slats later if desired.
Glass Panel Fencing
For a modern, upscale look, frameless glass panels create an open feel while providing complete safety. Glass doesn't obstruct views and makes your pool area feel larger. It costs more than other options but delivers stunning visual impact.
Designing Your Pool Fence
Beyond meeting safety codes, your pool fence should complement your outdoor living space. Think about how you use your pool area. Do you entertain often and want an open, welcoming feel? Aluminum or glass works great. Prefer more privacy for swimming? Consider vinyl panels or chain-link with privacy slats.
Gate placement matters too. You want convenient access from your house and patio, but you also want to control access points. We typically recommend one main gate with a view from your kitchen or living room, so you can monitor who goes in and out. Multiple gates make sense for larger pools or complex yard layouts.
Color coordination ties everything together. Match your pool fence to your home's exterior, your patio furniture, or your pool deck. Black aluminum is always popular because it looks sophisticated and doesn't show dirt. White vinyl creates a clean, resort-like atmosphere. We'll help you choose colors and styles that make your entire backyard look cohesive and well-planned, similar to how we approach all our fence installation projects.
